src Research Fellowship
powered by youth. driven by purpose.
The Sound Reengagement Collaborative's (SRC) Research Fellowship launched in Fall 2025 with our inaugural cohort. Fellows represented a range of community partners and programs across South King and Pierce Counties that serve Opportunity Youth and Adult Learners.
Through the Research Fellowship, the cohort designed and conducted a youth-led research project to uncover ways in which service providers and the Sound Reengagement Collaborative can improve program services to best support youth. Fellows gathered insights from their peers to identify barriers they face, illuminate what's not working in programs, and develop program improvement strategies that benefit SRC program participants. In addition to the research, fellows participated in monthly support meetings and trainings to support their professional, leadership, and identity development.
In Spring 2026, the cohort completed their research and presented their findings to the SRC network
Youth-Led Research
Guided by the Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) framework, fellows Alissa Tagoai, Nathaniel Perry, Nekaiya Lapsley, Daniel Evans, Ano Chivese, and Hadya Hamed spent the year investigating a question central to the SRC's mission: What strategies can programs use to promote participants' overall wellbeing and enable greater focus on education and career advancement?
2025–2026 Research Project & Findings
The fellows designed and conducted both quantitative and qualitative research — including a 35-item survey of 34 program participants across King and Pierce Counties and a series of audio diary entries that captured participant experiences, emotions, and perspectives over time.
Their findings highlighted the genuine strengths of SRC-affiliated programs — including high scores for welcoming environments and program flexibility — alongside meaningful gaps in mental and emotional wellbeing support, social connection, and resource awareness. Fellows closed their research with concrete recommendations for programs across the network, including individualized wellbeing plans, peer mentorship, trauma-informed staff training, and stronger resource navigation pathways.
